Marijuana Seed Sprouting Paper Towel – Part 3

cannabis_seeds_germinating

The medical marijuana seeds are still on top of the fridge and a small amount of distilled water was poured very gently over the paper towel to prevent it drying out.  All 6 seeds have begun sprouting their tap rootlet and growth is looking healthy and vigorous.

Today we are taking a few hours to get the growing area, lighting and the growing medium ready for the next stage.  The growing medium that we are starting with is rockwool blocks.  The rockwool was soaked in a conditioning mix until it was completely saturated and then left in a clean container ready for tomorrow.

The only extra step that was taken was that the pH of the conditioning solution was checked to make sure it was around 5.5 pH as instructed on rockwool instructions.

If are growing for medical purposes and you care about the health supporting quality of your plants you’ll probably prefer to use cotton cloth instead that has been washed in natural soap without artificial scent.

There are a LOT of chemicals used in the production of paper towels that do not require approval of the FDA because paper towels are not for human consumption.

I don’t know about you but I question the wisdom of soaking your seeds in the chemicals that paper towels are made from. Doing so adds bathes your expensive seeds with toxic elements from the very beginning of the seeds life as it germinates into a new plant.

As an alternative I first soak the seeds overnight in a glass (not plastic) of pure water. By the next morning the seeds that have soaked up the water will sink to the bottom of the glass. You may have to gently tap the glass for the seeds to sink. Once they do then introduce them to the washed cotton cloth and germinate the same as if you were using paper towels.

This way the nasty chemicals from the paper towel will not enter the seed. Also the pure water you soak the seeds in the first night is the water that first permeates the seed and prepares it for germination. This gives me a lot more comfort than bathing the vulnerable seed in a chemical bath in it’s first days of life.
